A Seminar for Healthcare Professionals:

“Promoting Favorable Births and

Supporting Successful Breastfeeding"

Organizer:  La Leche League – Aisa

Co-organizer: Pudong Women‘‘s Federation

Sponsor:  NanMatou Women‘‘s Federation

Date: Sunday, November 18, 2012

Language: Mandarin Chinese and English

Location: No.400, Nanmatou Road. 2nd floor Community center Theater

Cost:  Registration is free

Purpose: To offer an exchange of information, and educational platform, and to introduce evidence-based best practices in the areas of birthing and breastfeeding.

Background: In recent years, rates for natural births and breastfeeding in China have dropped sharply from decades before.  Certainly the reasons can be many, and clearly there are still many practices in the areas of birthing and breastfeeding in China that are not mother-baby-friendly, are outdated, or based on non-scientific beliefs. In terms of infant health, breast milk is the gold standard infant food, and alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth can help mother and baby get breastfeeding off to a good start.  We hope that by inviting high-level, well-known, internationally-recognized speakers who have made revolutionary achievements in their areas of expertise will catalyze positive change here in China.  We advocate the adoption of evidence-based practices for the best health outcomes of todays Chinese mothers and babies.

Participants:

We invite hospital directors, administrators, department heads, physicians,

community health care providers, doulas, nurses, midwives, childbirth instructors, IBCLCs, lactation professionals, traditional Chinese breast massagers, Chinese confinement nannies/postpartum midwives, confinement center staff, La Leche League Leaders. (Please note that this seminar is targeted to professionals as the information is highly technical in nature designed for healthcare providers who support breastfeeding mothers). We also welcome expecting mothers, breastfeeding mothers and babies, family members.

We Welcome Babies and Children at the Seminar

We will provide a play-mat and box of toys in another room for you and your child to play with during the lectures.  A diaper-changing area will also be available onsite. And, as usual, breastfeeding in the room during the sessions is always welcome.

Babies in arms who are easily quieted meld right into all La Leche League meetings and seminars as nursing mothers are very sensitive to their needs for food and comfort. Older babies and toddlers from ages one to three are often more of a challenge. Although they too are comforted with breastfeeding, older babies tend to vocalize sweet baby sounds and toddlers can be both very vocal and very mobile.

In order to provide a quiet atmosphere for the speaker and attendees, please be aware of the happy baby sounds, crying, and toddler noises that can be disturbing to others. When this occurs, please leave the session and tend to your baby or child until your child is calm enough to re-enter with you. Sometimes just a few minutes of walking in the hallway or a change of scene will do wonders to calm a baby or child.
